Telecommand and Telemetry Components for Today and Tomorrow

The CCSDS Telecommand (TC) and Telemetry (TM) standards are today being employed for a large number of scientific and commercial spacecraft. Using this standard allows reduced costs for on-board, ground and test equipment, as well as for spacecraft testing and in-orbit operation. This paper introduces the CCSDS/ESA standards, and presents the supporting standard components developed by ESA and a typical TM/TC system based on these components. Some examples of spacecraft using these components are then given. To round off the paper a new concept for essential telemetry retrieval is introduced. Some issues for future developments of TM/TC components are listed, intended as a first input for discussions on the development approach and priorities.
